the wild optimism that everything will be better if you join the right fraternity, find the right guru, eat the right root vegetables, or read the right book.
I don't usually have much to say, but maybe I could highlight my favorite cartoon of the week. The only issue is, there's no good way to "link through" to cartoons - I guess I could just indicate with e.g. "pg. 53"
Negatory; I'll be honest, I make very, very little time for scripted television. I used to watch a lot of it, but I prioritize different formats now for whatever reason. What did you think?
I still very much enjoy going to the cinema, but streaming has a world of outstanding long form productions, it's hard not to go along for the ride. Lots of forgettable bubble gum for the eyes, but still many gems to be found.
The casting and acting in Beef were exceptionally good, as were the script, character development, and overall story. The pettiness and triggers were relatable. The array of characters were well honed, grounded in reality (these types exist, we've met them, or seen them). Any laggy sections or sub-story lines were brief, so only a quibble. The entire last episode was the ending, so in that regard, wasn't rushed. The momentary gesture in the last seconds was perfect, in a way, because it resolved the hanging question without belabouring the point. Further embellishment would have gone against the tone of the series, and would have been dipped into sentimentality.
I thought the review missed, or chose to ignore, that one of the main characters attendance at marriage counselling was
knowingly performative, artful, not genuine; psychological insights being another thing she had to get exactly right to keep the shit show from becoming visible.
Succession I do watch, and love, but I haven't been able to keep up with the most recent season - unfortunate, since it was impossible to avoid spoilers for the last episode.
I watch tons of films - I'm in a film MFA, so that sort of thing, especially experimental & documentary stuff, is my stock in trade; I try to keep up. It's nice being in the NY metro area where there's a ton of stuff projected on film still - a great resource in that regard: https://analogfilmnyc.org/
A great movie I watched recently if you like out-of-the-box stuff: The Tsugua Diaries
I won't watch season 4 until all episodes are available. Glad you've watched this one, so much going on, I think I'll have to rewatch the whole thing, even if only to see how many ways Culkin can find to never sit on anything like a normal person.
Have you kept up with South Korean films at all?
Great that you still have somewhere local to see films the old fashioned way.
You missed the story on Catwalk! https://adambnathan.substack.com/p/catwalk
Would you consider including some comment on the cartoons? I would welome that.

Great review - appreciate your perspective. Maybe I'll check it out.
If were going to break your non-habit, I'd recommend Succession, well, because, everything. 🤣🤣.
Do you still see films, or did Covid kill that for everyone?

Doesn't look like Tsugua is available in Australia.
